Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center - Gettysburg Foundation & National Park Service

Gettysburg has always been a "must see" for every American. With the opening of the new Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park on April 14, 2008, it became a "must do" for those who have visited before as well as those who have yet to come.

The 139,000-square-foot Museum and Visitor Center blends the familiar with exciting new programs, exhibits and experiences. Located just a short distance from the old Visitor Center and major points on the Battlefield, the new facilities have ample parking and designated lots for tour buses to help visitors move quickly to the welcome and exhibit areas. Groups also will be able to meet their Licensed Battlefield Guide there, and catch the shuttle to the Eisenhower National Historic Site.

Throughout the 11 exhibit galleries, visitors still will encounter some of the popular items from the collection (weaponry and uniforms, for example)  along with a great deal more. State-of-the-art galleries will use a greater variety of objects and artifacts from Gettysburg National Military Park’s extensive collection (and from other museums and private collections from around the country) to offer perspective, and a greater appreciation for the sacrifices of those who became a part of the greatest battle ever fought in North America.

The Gettysburg Cyclorama painting opened to the public on Friday, September 26, 2008 in the new Museum and Visitor Center.

The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center is available for facility rentals to outside groups.

The Gettysburg Foundation is a private, non-profit educational organization working in partnership with the National Park Service to enhance preservation and understanding of the heritage and lasting significance of Gettysburg. The Foundation raised funds for and operates the Museum and Visitor Center in partnership with the National Park Service.

The Foundation has a broad preservation mission, including land, artifact and monument preservation, education and battlefield rehabilitation--all in support of the National Park Service's goals at Gettysburg.

Host a Unique Experience at the NEW Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park

The theme of history makes for ideal meeting and event settings, both from an educational and a social perspective.

Social Connection
There are countless stories of friendships and romantic relationships that began at Gettysburg, largely because people who visit find they have in common their love of history and their relationship is formed at, or because of, their ties to Gettysburg. So when it’s time to celebrate the relationship, it’s logical that the perfect setting to hold weddings, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations and other milestones – Gettysburg and its history is the perfect backdrop. Also social groups from Civil War Round Tables and other special interest groups are perfect matches for this setting.

Educational Connection
Most often people are drawn to Gettysburg, one of America’s most significant places, because of the stories related to the American Civil War, The Battle of Gettysburg, the study of military history, and President Abraham Lincoln that abound at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. With our offerings of interactive and multimedia exhibits, short films, artifacts and information about the American Civil War and Battle of Gettysburg, we offer the perfect setting for education. Our facility offers state-of-the-art audio-visual technology for educational events, a special “group entrance” providing easy in-and-out access for groups, multiple classroom settings including large and small break-out rooms, a beautiful board room setting with historic artifacts displayed in the room for smaller, more intimate meetings, two theaters for offering presentations on wide screens to an audience of nearly 175 people, and on-site catering in the Refreshment Saloon, a spacious room with beautiful stonework, a cozy working fireplace and grand view of nature through our glass wall vista as well as an outdoor patio for spring, summer and fall.

Nearly every type of meeting or event can feature an historic aspect for a special event, dinner, cocktail hour. Examples are corporate meetings, weddings, rehearsal dinners for weddings, educational seminars, courses on historic/military leadership, wedding anniversary parties, Chamber of commerce meetings, training sessions for certified tourism ambassadors, historic lecture series, author book signings, etc.

Event planners and attendees alike love to meet in venues with historical backgrounds. Here’s why…
It carries appeal to those who are interested in American Civil War/Battle of Gettysburg, emotional attachment to themes, value-added offering to their event - we can offer speakers on topics of history; we can offer people in period dress of American Civil War, i.e. General Robert E. Lee, President Abraham Lincoln; they can have private viewing of the rare Cyclorama painting of Pickett’s Charge of the Battle of Gettysburg; private viewing of special film, “A New Birth of Freedom” narrated by Morgan Freeman; private viewing of our 12-gallery museum; our Refreshment Saloon is elegant, charming with a beautiful stone, working fireplace with wall-length window looking out to beautiful wooded scenery – great ambiance.
