I understand that there is currently road construction in Gettysburg. What areas will this affect and for how long?
Gettysburg is hard at work preparing for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. In preparation, we are improving roads and sidewalks around town. Currently, Highway 30 east of Gettysburg is being improved. Bridge replacements are also taking place on Emmitsburg Road and Fairfield Road (PA Route 116). Resurfacing will also take place on Route 15 North. Information on each project is outlined below. West Middle Street/PA Route 116 is now open.
What is being done on Highway 30 in Gettysburg?
Beginning on July 11, preparatory work will begin on a 3.74 mile section of Route 30 from the WalMart Access Road over Route 15 to Coleman Road. Beginning Monday night, July 11, motorists may encounter single-lane restrictions with flaggers alternating traffic through the work zone weeknights between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am. Work will also take place from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm during weekdays.
Highway 30 east of Gettysburg - what is being done and how will it affect my travel?
If you are traveling into Gettysburg from the east, or travel Highway 30 to visit New Oxford while in the area, you will find construction taking place to widen the road. Traffic lanes remain open, though traffic patterns will change. Look for possible paving at night, helping to reduce traffic issues during the day.
What bridges are being replaced and where are they located? (updated June 30)
Bridge replacement is currently being conducted on the Marsh Creek Bridge on Emmitsburg Road/Business 15. The bridge was closed in March and will take approximately 1 year to replace. Detour signs are posted to assist drivers. Visitors staying at the Eisenhower Hotel or the Western Inn are encouraged to call for directions. Construction on the Route 16 bridge over the Miney Branch of Toms Creek, west of Carroll Valley will begin June 2. Motorists will encounter single-lane restrictions if traveling Route 16/Waynesboro Pike between the Waynesboro area and Carroll Valley. In conjunction with the bridge replacement, Old Waynesboro Road will be closed to traffic in the vicinity of the bridge and be detoured by way of Harbaugh Valley Road and Route 16. This project should be completed by mid November. The Route 394 bridge over Route 15 in Straban Township and the Route 134 bridge over Route 15 in Cumberland Township will be closed for approximately three months for bridge rehabilitation. Motorists traveling Route 394 will encounter a signed detour June 15 - Sept. 22 around the bridge closure by way of Route 15 via the Route 234 and Route 30 interchanges. Motorists traveling Route 134 will be detoured June 15 - Oct. 12 by way of Route 15 via the Business Route 15 and Route 97 interchanges. Beginning in November 2011, the Rock Creek Bridge on Hanover Street (PA Route 116) will begin the replacement process. Hanover Street (PA Route 116) will be closed from Route 15 to Sixth Street. The detour will be Route 30.
What portion of Route 15 will be resurfaced and when will this occur?
Route 15 paving began June 13 in Adams County. The project includes resurfacing a 4.6-mile portion of Route 15 between Route 234 and just north of Route 94 in northern Adams County. Motorists are advised that they may encounter single-lane restrictions through the work zone during daylight hours as crews resurface the roadway with a bituminous overlay, adjust inlets, install guiderail and paint new traffic lines. PennDOT reminds motorists that these daytime restrictions on Route 15 are expected to last several weeks.
How long should I plan to stay when visiting Gettysburg?
The Gettysburg CVB recommends three days to experience historic Gettysburg, the Gettysburg National Military Park, and all the fantastic attractions and stores throughout Gettysburg and Adams County.
What is the best airport to use when planning a visit to Gettysburg?
With the central location of our community, visitors can choose from Harrisburg International, Baltimore Washington International, Regan National, or Dulles International Airports.
Is it possible to get to Gettysburg using public transportation?

How long will it take me to get to Gettysburg from Washington, DC?
We are only 90 minutes from the Nations' Capital.
Are the reenactments held on the Battlefields?
No, because the Gettysburg National Military Park is hallowed grounds, the reenactment is held on a private farm.
How many reenactments are there each year in Gettysburg?
Just one, hosted by the Gettysburg Anniversary Committee. The event is held as close to the anniversary dates of July 1-3 as possible. But, if you can't make that event, Living History Encampments are held April through October giving you a first-hand experience with Civil War soldiers.
I want to find out more information on a family member who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. Where do I start?
There are several ways, including a service through the Gettysburg National Military Park and another through the Horse Soldier.
